Saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman (1930-2015) was one of the great musical innovators and originals of the 20th century, in jazz or any other genre. From his breaking out from R&B and bebop in the late 1950s to the end of his life, his career was a constant exploration of the expressive and conceptual possibilities of sound. American filmmaker Shirley Clarke’s documentary, which the director worked on for 20 years, takes an experimental approach to form inspired by the prismatic structure of Coleman’s music.
