People’s Emergency Center (PEC) is a West Philly-based housing and community development non-profit that provides a wide range of support and engagement opportunities to Philly residents, including emergency and permanent housing for women, families, and artists, neighborhood arts engagement, healthcare services, digital inclusion programming, financial literacy, and more. Our policy department works to bring awareness and make concrete change to benefit children and families who experience homelessness in Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania.
PEC’s new youth-focused policy initiative is working to organize young people ages 13-24 with lived experience of housing insecurity to fight for the right to safe, stable housing for local Philadelphians. The project is working to recruit young people with diverse experiences of housing insecurity, and to train them in advocacy strategy, political education, systems navigation, and trauma and mental health skills. Training of youth is occurring alongside parallel experiential opportunities to engage in local advocacy, art, and grassroots work that will benefit from youth engagement and input as Philadelphia advocates work towards fighting homelessness in the city.
